Full-time Veterinary Surgical Technician/Assistant. No weekends and very competitive pay.
The Animal Rescue League of Iowa (ARL) is seeking a veterinary technician to work in our surgical area full time. This position is perfect for a candidate who wants a great job, a career working with animals and weekends off! Qualified candidates should ideally be certified, but years of practical experience will be considered in lieu of certification. Candidates should possess a high level of skill, be able to work independently in a fast-paced environment, have excellent communication skills, possess keen attention to detail, be a quick learner and be able to work as part of a team. The ability to lift and carry animals up to 55 pounds is required. Prior animal shelter experience is a plus. We offer very competitive pay specific to a veterinary surgical technician (starting at $14.00/hour and going up depending on education and experience), benefits, including 401(k), and a good work environment. This position is Monday-Friday from 7 a.m.-4 p.m.

The College of Veterinary Medicine at Iowa State University is accepting applications for multiple Veterinary Technician positions within the Lloyd Veterinary Medical Center (LVMC). The LVMC provides specialized care and comprehensive medical and surgical services for companion and large animals throughout Iowa and surrounding states. Our clinicians, residents and interns, technicians, staff, and senior veterinary students work in teams to provide 24-hour, state-of-the-art care to animal patients.

This is a pool posting for Veterinary Technicians within the Lloyd Veterinary Medical Center. The position details listed in this section are expected of all Veterinary Technician positions, and individuals may be assigned additional specialized duties upon hire. Under the supervision of licensed and specialty veterinarians, all veterinary technicians assist with medical procedures, student instruction, equipment management, and provide administrative assistance to veterinary services as assigned. This position will also cross train with other technician positions throughout the hospital and fill in as needed in other areas.

The successful candidate will possess multi-tasking skills to manage patients and students, demonstrate attention to detail for managing cases, and possess excellent communication skills to effectively interact with patients, clients, referring veterinarians, faculty, interns and residents, and staff members. Technical skills expected include, but are not limited to, venipuncture, peripheral intravenous catheter placement, performing basic physical exams, knowledge of appropriate species normal vitals, and appropriate animal restraint. Basic abilities to utilize common veterinary equipment such as blood pressure monitors, EKG machines, and gas anesthesia machines are also necessary.

Primary hours of hospital operation are 1st shift; some services operate with 24-hour coverage requiring a combination of shifts including a rotation of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd shifts. Shift differential pay will be applied in accordance with University policies. Specific service areas of need will be discussed further with interview candidates.

The LVMC provides specialized care and comprehensive medical and surgical services for companion animals throughout Iowa and surrounding states. Our clinicians, residents and interns, technicians, staff, and senior veterinary students work in teams to provide 24-hour, state-of-the-art care to animal patients.

The Central Service Technician will be responsible for cleaning, sterilization and assembly of equipment, supplies and surgical instruments for preparation of instrument packs for the small and large animal surgical services.

Incumbent will perform technical procedures for preparation of sterile instrument supplies and equipment. Incumbent will be responsible for maintaining environmental integrity and surgical and sterilization equipment of the Lloyd Veterinary Medical Center Central Sterilization Service.

This is a part time position, working 20 hours per week. Work hours are 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm Monday through Friday

The Blank Park Zoo in Des Moines, Iowa is seeking well qualified candidates for the position of Veterinary Assistant/Technician. The Blank Park Zoo houses over 180 different species of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish. The successful applicant will be expected to serve an essential function as part of the Animal Health Team by assisting veterinarians during veterinary procedures and treatments, maintaining medical records, supervising and teaching veterinary students on rotation, and providing care to hospitalized animals. This position reports directly to the Chief Veterinarian & Associate Veterinarian at the Blank Park Zoo.

The recently remodeled Blank Park Zoo Veterinary Hospital includes on-site treatment, surgery, pharmacy, laboratory, hospital, necropsy and student training areas. Hospital equipment includes portable digital radiography, ultrasound, thermography, I-STAT blood analyst, multi-parameter monitors, and endoscopy.

The Veterinary Assistant will be expected to understand AZA and AAZV Standards and strive to meet or exceed current standards for Zoo Animal Care. Preference will be given to well qualified candidates that possess previous working experience as a certified veterinary technician or employed as a veterinary assistant for at least 2 years. Experience with captive wild animal care and or exotic animal veterinary care is preferred. Hours and days for work may vary, and will include weekends, evenings, and holidays. This is a permanent, full-time, hourly-paid position. (Expected yearly pay range $25,000- $27,000 per year plus benefits).

Additional duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Assisting veterinarians and completing medical tasks as directed, including, but not limited to, preparing for patient procedures and anesthesia monitoring during veterinary procedures.
  • Entering medical record information into paper medical records and ZIMS Medical system.
  • Assists with cleanliness, stocking, ordering and organization of all veterinary hospital facilities.
  • Follows all protocols to maintain safe conditions for staff and animals.
  • Completes tasks related to all aspects of animal care and welfare for animals in need of

    temporary hospital support: monitoring behavior, preparing diets and feeding schedules, cleaning and disinfection of enclosures, feeding utensils, etc.; animal enrichment and husbandry training; maintenance of zoo facilities and exhibits.

  • Physical requirements will include the ability to lift up to 50 lbs, stand for long periods of time, and work in a variety of indoor and outdoor environments.
  • Ability to supervise, direct and mentor senior veterinary students and veterinary technician students on rotation at the zoo.
  • Other duties as assigned. 

Requirements:

  • Must possess the ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Must possess an Iowa Driver’s License.
  • A current rabies titer is preferred.
  • A Negative TB Test is required for this position.
