Prairie View Animal Hospital in Grimes is seeking candidates to fill a full-time veterinary technician position including some Saturdays. RVT or 2 years’ experience is preferred. The College of Veterinary Medicine at Iowa State University, Ames, Iowa, is accepting applications for two certified Veterinary Technicians in Anesthesia, at the Lloyd Veterinary Medical Center (LVMC). The LVMC provides specialized care and comprehensive medical and surgical services for companion animals throughout Iowa and surrounding states. Our clinicians, residents and interns, technicians, staff, and senior veterinary students work in teams to provide 24-hour, state-of-the-art care to animal patients.

This position provides and uses appropriate anesthetic techniques and principles for patients and research animals in the LVMC. The anesthesia technician will assess animals prior to anesthesia and determine an anesthetic protocol that is suitable and in the patient’s best interest for the procedure to be performed. This position will also need to have a complete understanding of the physiologic and pharmacologic principles of the medications and preparations used in the field of anesthesia, including medications for pain management.

The anesthesia technician will provide service with the guidance, supervision, and instruction from the anesthesiologists of the LVMC. The technician will also instruct and demonstrate veterinary anesthetic techniques to veterinary students and will provide assistance to veterinary clinicians and investigative staff in their treatment of animals, teaching, or research functions. This position will also cross train with other technician positions throughout the hospital and fill in if needed in other areas.

The responsibilities of this position will require the successful candidate to have the ability to lift up to 50 – 75 lbs and restrain patients as needed; lift dogs onto tables and manually restrain them; manipulate horses in induction area and aid in hoisting onto surgical table; manually work with knobs and buttons; handle a lead rope; see sufficiently well to detect respiratory motions of the chest; and hear sufficiently well enough to detect soft heart murmurs.

The successful candidate will possess multi-tasking skills to manage patients and students, demonstrate attention to detail for managing cases, and possess excellent communication skills to effectively interact with patients, clients, referring veterinarians, faculty, and staff members.
Certification as a Veterinary Technician is required. Experience within a veterinary practice and/or research related facility as a veterinary technician; clinical experience with anesthesia; and, a Veterinary Technician Specialist in Anesthesia is preferred.

The College of Veterinary Medicine at Iowa State University is accepting applications for a certified Veterinary Technician for the Lloyd Veterinary Medical Center (LVMC). The LVMC provides specialized care and comprehensive medical and surgical services for companion animals throughout Iowa and surrounding states. Our clinicians, residents and interns, technicians, staff, and senior veterinary students work in teams to provide 24-hour, state-of-the-art care to animal patients.
Under general supervision, this position will provide care for ill and injured animal patients. Duties include instructing and demonstrating veterinary care, animal husbandry, and experimental techniques to veterinary students and providing assistance to students, clinicians, and faculty members in various departments in their treatment of animals, teaching, and clinical research.
This position will provide animal restraint for equine, food animal and small animal disciplines. The duties of this position require the ability to lift 50-70 lbs, have sufficient manual dexterity, and good eye-hand coordination for suturing and intravenous catheter placement. Additionally, this position must be able to run while holding onto a horse during the lameness examination; lead a horse or other large animal with a lead rope and lunge a horse; tolerate urine, feces, blood, and other body fluids; withstand strong and offensive odors; work in very cold and very warm environments; tolerate hay, straw, grain dust, and loud noises; and support heavy weights.
The successful candidate will possess multi-tasking skills to manage patients and students while performing procedures; demonstrate attention to detail for managing cases, scheduling, and performing or supervising procedures; have the ability to identify patients and the suspected procedure needed; and possess excellent communication skills to effectively interact with patients, clients, referring veterinarians, faculty, and staff members.

Certification as a Veterinary Technician is required. Preferred qualifications include experience that demonstrates skills with computer programs used to measure and calculate lameness equipment including Excel and MatLab; experience within a veterinary hospital or other related veterinary facility conducive to animal handling and care; experience with Animal Care and Use Committee training guidelines; and experience working with equine/large animals.
