Sprawling over 100,000 square feet, the Small Animal Hospital is AAHA accredited and the Emergency and Critical Care Service is Level I certified by VECCS. We offer 13 specialty services to the over 39,000 patients seen yearly and are seeking technicians who have a strong interest and passion for a particular specialty in veterinary medicine. The Small Animal Hospital is a proud advocate of those wanting to continue to grow personally and professionally in the veterinary field and even those considering a technician specialty certification (VTS). Technicians should be motivated individuals who possess the drive to succeed in a busy hospital and have an interest in working in an educational environment.

Paid internship opportunities are also available in our Emergency & Critical Care and Anesthesia services. The program is designed to offer technicians the opportunity to increase their knowledge and gain experience in a specific discipline. Applications are due February 28th, 2017.

Overall the Small Animal Hospital offers medical and surgical care for dogs, cats, birds, and exotic pets through a spectrum of cutting edge technologies. Some highlights for various services include telemetry monitoring systems, in-house blood donation services, hemodialysis machines, mechanical ventilation systems, state-of-the art areas including a specialized isolation area and a catheterization lab, MRI, CT, and digital radiology suites, and the capability to use various rehabilitative modalities (i.e. hyperbaric oxygen therapy, underwater treadmills, and acupuncture) and a LINAC (Linear Accelerator) machine.

The College of Veterinary Medicine at Iowa State University is accepting applications for a certified Veterinary Technician for the Lloyd Veterinary Medical Center (LVMC). The LVMC provides specialized care and comprehensive medical and surgical services for companion animals throughout Iowa and surrounding states. Our clinicians, residents and interns, technicians, staff, and senior veterinary students work in teams to provide 24-hour, state-of-the-art care to animal patients.
Under general supervision, this position will provide care for ill and injured animal patients. Duties include instructing and demonstrating veterinary care, animal husbandry, and experimental techniques to veterinary students and providing assistance to students, clinicians, and faculty members in various departments in their treatment of animals, teaching, and clinical research.
This position will provide animal restraint for equine, food animal and small animal disciplines. The duties of this position require the ability to lift 50-70 lbs, have sufficient manual dexterity, and good eye-hand coordination for suturing and intravenous catheter placement. Additionally, this position must be able to run while holding onto a horse during the lameness examination; lead a horse or other large animal with a lead rope and lunge a horse; tolerate urine, feces, blood, and other body fluids; withstand strong and offensive odors; work in very cold and very warm environments; tolerate hay, straw, grain dust, and loud noises; and support heavy weights.
The successful candidate will possess multi-tasking skills to manage patients and students while performing procedures; demonstrate attention to detail for managing cases, scheduling, and performing or supervising procedures; have the ability to identify patients and the suspected procedure needed; and possess excellent communication skills to effectively interact with patients, clients, referring veterinarians, faculty, and staff members.
