The Blank Park Zoo in Des Moines, Iowa is seeking well qualified candidates for the position of Animal Health Center Manager/Technician.The Blank Park Zoo houses over 180 different species of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish.The successful applicant will be expected to serve an essential function as part of the Animal Health Team by managing the day-to-day operations of the Animal Health Center, assisting veterinarians during veterinary procedures and treatments, maintaining medical records, supervising and teaching veterinary students on rotation, and providing care to hospitalized animals.This position reports directly to the Chief Veterinarian & Associate Veterinarian at the Blank Park Zoo.

The recently remodeled Blank Park Zoo Veterinary Hospital includes on-site treatment, surgery, pharmacy, laboratory, hospital, necropsy and student training areas. Hospital equipment includes portable digital radiography, ultrasound, thermography, I-STAT blood analyst, multi-parameter monitors, and endoscopy.

The Hospital Manager/Technician will be expected to understand AZA and AAZV Standards and strive to meet or exceed current standards for Zoo Animal Care. Preference will be given to well qualified candidates that possess previous working experience as a Hospital Manager, certified veterinary technician or employed as a veterinary assistant for at least 3 years.Experience with Zoo wild animal care and or exotic animal veterinary care is preferred. Hours and days for work may vary, and will include weekends, evenings, and holidays.This is a permanent, full-time, hourly-paid position.(Expected yearly pay range $27,000-30,000 per year plus benefits).

Additional duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Manage day-to-day operations of the Blank Park Zoo Animal Health Center.
  • Assist veterinarians and complete medical tasks as directed, including, but not limited to, preparing for patient procedures and anesthesia monitoring during veterinary procedures.
  • Track departmental expenses to maintain budget goals.
  • Enter medical record information into paper medical records and ZIMS electronic Medical Record system.
  • Maintain cleanliness, stocking, ordering and organization of all veterinary hospital facilities.
  • Follows all protocols to maintain safe conditions for staff and animals.
  • Completes tasks related to all aspects of animal care and welfare for animals in need of temporary hospital support:monitoring behavior, preparing diets and feeding schedules, cleaning and disinfection of enclosures, feeding utensils, etc.; animal enrichment and husbandry training; maintenance of zoo facilities and exhibits.
  • Physical requirements will include the ability to lift up to 50 lbs, stand for long periods of time, bend, squat, kneel, push and pull equipment, and work in a variety of indoor and outdoor environments and all weather conditions.
  • Supervise, teach, direct and mentor senior veterinary students and veterinary technician students on rotation at the zoo.
  • Other duties as assigned.


  • Must possess the ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Must possess an Iowa Driver’s License.
  • A current rabies titer is preferred.
  • A Negative TB Test is required for this position.
  • Ability to pass a background check upon offer of position.

Specific responsibilities & duties to include:

  • Review vaccination records and prepare vaccines according to our vaccine protocol
  • Place IV catheters
  • Anesthetic induction & intubation of patients & pain management of surgery patients
  • Assist with anesthetic monitoring
  • Administer treatments and injections as directed by doctor
  • Take vital signs of patients including temperature, pulse, and respiration
  • Perform radiographs on patients
  • Perform routine dental procedures
  • Check in/discharge patients and provide client education
  • Assist doctors with patient restraint, patient treatment and patient care; knowledge of restraint of fractious patients
  • Prepare prescriptions for patients
  • Assist with surgical prep and procedures
  • Perform routine laboratory testing
  • Clean and maintain the hospital premises, including kennels and equipment
  • Document and maintain patient charts in Avimark
  • Schedule appointments for multiple doctors, recording messages for doctors and team
  • Perform other duties as assigned
  • Utilize Fear Free/stress free techniques

Required Qualifications and Experience:

  • Registered Veterinary Technician in Iowa (Vet Tech)
  • Ability to work 2 Saturdays a month and on call every 6-8 weeks
  • Comfortable with dogs and cats of all breeds and sizes
  • Ability to appropriately & safely restrain (when necessary) fractious pets
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs
  • Ability to stand/walk for entire shift
  • Have strong client education & communication skills
  • Must have a can-do attitude and be a team player
  • Must be detail oriented with the ability to think clearly and multitask in a fast-paced environment

IMPORTANT : This position requires a flexible schedule working 35-40 hours per week including 2 Saturdays a month and on call rotation. Hours of operation are Monday - Friday 8am - 6pm, Saturday 8am-12pm.
